UT Cache Cleaner Troubleshooting

Problem Solution UTCC UTCC2003

UTCC says my CACHE.INI file is missing It's typically a registry issue and can be easily fixed with the included UTCC Troubleshooter utility.

<UT Reg Dir>: G:\UnrealTournament\System\ <--- this needs to read G:\UnrealTournament
--------------------------------------------------------

<Cache Cleaner Reg Dir>: G:\UnrealTournament\System\Cache <--- this needs to read G:\UnrealTournament\Cache

Run the UTCC Troubleshooter again, at the first prompt ensure you select the cache directory (Ex - G:\UnrealTournament\Cache), click the "Set UT Registry" button and select the root UT directory (Ex - G:\UnrealTournament), click the "Clear UT Cache Cleaner Registry" button, and then click "Exit".

UTCC should now run properly...if not, re-run UTCC Troubleshooter and ensure your settings match what I show above. If you still have problems after all of this, send me a UTCC Troubleshooter file.

Running Windows 98 and UTCC says there's an automation error

Try these things in order:

1.  Uninstall UTCC2003, download a new copy from www.utcache.com/ut.asp, reboot (important), re-install UTCC2003 using the new copy, and run it.

 2.  If #1 doesn't fix it, get the latest update from http://UTCCUpdate.utcache.com, extract the file over where you installed UTCC2003 (example - c:\program files\utcc2003) and let it overwrite the existing file (if you don't get an overwrite warning, you extracted it to the wrong place), and run UTCC2003.

 3.  If neither of the above fix the issue, download and install the latest MDAC from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9ad000f2-cae7-493d-b0f3-ae36c570ade8&DisplayLang=en, reboot, and try running UTCC2003 again.

 4.  If that doesn't fix it, create a new MS Word or Write document, get a screen shot of the error (press Alt-Print Screen, go to Word or Write and press Ctrl-V to paste the picture, ZIP the file, and email it to me.

Windows 98 is a unique system and sometimes things just don't work properly...

UTCC Troubleshooter Information This is what the troubleshooter screen will look like on a working  system with UT2K3 installed to E:\GAMES\UT2003.

If your "UT Registry" line doesn't show "UT2003" (or whatever directory you used to install it to) as the last item, then click the "Set UT Registry" button.

If your "UT  Registry" line is incorrect, then more than likely your "UT Cache Cleaner Registry" line will be incorrect as well.  If it is, ensure you clicked the "Set UT Registry" button first and then click the "Clear UT Cache Cleaner Registry".  Once you've done that, exit the Troubleshooter, and run UTCC 2003 again.

Note - There is also a help file that comes with UTCC2003

I ran UTCC, but my Cache.INI file has only one line in it and I still have many UXX files in the UT2003 Cache directory.

*or*

UTCC now says there are no files, but there are still many UXX files in the UT2003 Cache directory.

I’m guessing you ran UTCC one or more times without updating it to the latest version.
The release that’s available on Fileplanet and a few other sites is v1.0.
That version was released, worked perfectly, and then they changed the naming convention for cache files (added a “-1”).

The latest version is available using the built-in update feature on the Options tab in UTCC or from the previous page.

If you only ran UTCC once, then you can recover what the INI file had in it. UTCC renames cache.ini to cacheini.bak, so look for it in your Cache directory under UT2003, verify what’s in the file using Notepad, and rename it to cache.ini if it contains many entries. Once the original cache.ini file is restored, ensure you have the latest version of UTCC (1.3), and then run it.
It might also be possible to recover the cache.ini file from your Recycle Bin, so check there if the cacheini.bak contains only one line.

If you ran UTCC more than once and the file "cache.ini" can;t be recovered from the Recycle Bin, then sorry to say that you can’t recover what was in the cache.ini file and the UXX files in your cache directory are useless.

There was no way for me to know that Atari would change the naming convention, but a fix was released to the community a few days after I discovered it.

The latest version provides an option to ZIP the entire cache directory before making any changes.
